At the vilma offices thanks to Gediminas and Nomeda — for hosting the stream I’m sending to Steve of art@radio in Baltimore who has an elaborate studio set-up for the live streaming he’ll be doing from there to The Long Night of Radio Art that is part of the Reinventing Radio project of KunstRadio. the whole project will be broadcast on FM, shortwave, a special 5.1 digital satellite transmission, and online. (Taking a breath). Yeah, live online. Meet August on the IRC channel broadcasting from Santa Barbara.

Baltimore, USA :: jamming radiophonic space :: 19:30 – 06:00 Eastern Standard Time

“jamming radiophonic space,” modulates the interplay of radio, Internet, wireless transmission, an private space.

This experientially diverse and geographically scattered group will contribute to “jamming radiophonic space” through decentralized, networked, and collaborative strategies of production and distribution. Streaming feeds from microphones places in and around artists’ workspaces will be gathered along with ambient sound called in via wireless and landline phones; requests have already gone out over electronic list-serves for individuals to call in and point their live phones for 10 or 15 minutes towards sounds emblematic of their time and place.

These sonic interruptions will then be mixed and processed into a stream of “hot media” by artists present in the Baltimore studio space using baby monitors, short-wave radios, software, and other improvised sound tools. The stream will then be made available world-wide to streaming clients via wired and wireless data connections.

George, you know me as something of a cynic, and while I have always admired you and your trajectory, and what you have accomplished over the past 45 years, I’m afraid that I disagree with the idea that culture (cultural production) can save our society from what is, perhaps, an inevitable trajectory. Having just finished reading

Klemperer, Victor. To the Bitter End: The Diaries of Victor Klemperer, 1942–1945. 1st ed. Vol. 2. 3 vols. New York, NY: Random House, 1999.

I was reminded how culture is often (always?) overtaken (taken over?) and becomes an extension of the dominating state (or power in control of the state). While throughout the Third Reich, there were countless small acts of kindness in the face of extreme social oppression and control, this did not stop the juggernaut of singular human pathology turning the overall society into a violent (Nazi) killing machine. And along with the killing, that machine simply subsumed cultural production. Remember book-banning-then-burning? Oh, wait, no need to remember, I can read about the banning here, now!

The foundation of the Amurikan system since WWII is predicated on an often-hidden-but-often-expressed element of violence that has superseded any prior Empires by orders of magnitude. We are of that system, and fully immersed within it. Think of both our long-ago stints in service of the “Imperialist Vanguard”!

I do truly hope that your optimism is not misplaced as we seem to slide into a vortex quite similar to the many vortices experienced by humans in the past and/or in other places. I often have the feeling that so many people in the contemporary developed world are so fully immersed in the consumption of mediated constructs of the world that unmediated, meat-space, direct apprehension of the world has been lost or at least stripped of its value. This would include direct face-to-face engagement with proximal Life (not in films, not online, not in books, but in direct expression and embodied impression). This is a fundamental of community that has been severely drained of vitality … by, for example, ‘social media’. Vitality going down the drain, along with the fundamental structures of a sustainable society.

In a way, the power of Klemperer’s diaries, as written/mediated, contradict everything I have expressed here and do support your core idea, as they were ‘simply’ his writings—detailed daily reflections on events and feelings in his more immediate surrounds—that, through his perseverance, made it, bound, to my bedside table. Thence, in hand, giving rise to change within my embodied system. However, the time I spent reading them, well, would it have been better spent helping a neighbor (as I have been helped on occasion during my recent rural existence)? We cannot have anything approaching a democracy without community, and neither can we have a just or truly diverse society without the repeated, crucial encounter with the Other: open, embodied, hypostatic, indeterminate, unscripted, and imbued with the active presence of change. (Again, I contradict, yes, writing can do this, any mediated fragment of culture can do this, but …)

Hope this jangling screed doesn’t come across badly. Maybe I should have kept it in our private convos, such as they are! You know my respect for you. So it goes.

Perhaps this points to the idea that there are only small acts of kindness. That there are, in perceived reality, no societal, cultural acts of kindness. That tribal is tribal, clan is clan, and the will to survive in that exclusive social configuration is primal and primary. Altruism, while potentially able to bridge particular rival societal strictures in particular instances, is not able to change wider societal trajectories. This may be the source of liberal failure: imagining, falsely, that it is possible to do what is not possible, taming animal nature. Perhaps this impulse is simply another expression of human hubris. It also may explain the sudden withdrawal of (many) liberals from the scene in the moment, in the face of that wider swell (tsunami!) of societal grievance led by … a singular pathological will-to-survive. This retreat may have a texture of localized kindness, wonderful! But cataclysm at the more global scale may be inevitable. Indeed, at the psycho-spiritual scale maybe this is what Life is: the challenge to find a(n internal) energy source for the expression of kindness in the cataclysm. Not sure I personally have the capacity for this anymore, but that is another issue.

neoscenes is again participating in the Reveil global audio streaming project for the tenth year, adding a small sonic expression to this ongoing collaborative broadcast: Reveil 24-hour live broadcast 2024 (one dimension of Soundcamp) 03-05 May (depending on your time zone — see below for exact local times).

Reveil is a collective production by streamers at listening points around the earth. Starting on the morning of Saturday 4 May in South London near the Greenwich Meridian, the broadcast will pick up feeds one by one, tracking the sunrise west from microphone to microphone, following the wave of intensified sound that loops the earth every 24 hours at first light.

Streams come from a variety of locations and situations, at a time of day when many people are unaccustomed to be up and out, but sounds are vivid, especially in Spring. The Reveil broadcast makes room by largely avoiding speech and music, gravitating to places where human and non human communities meet and soundworlds overlap.

Sounds produced by birds, amphibians, weather, fish, electromagnetic fluctuations, people, machines, vegetation, transmission artifacts, convey the variety of planetary soundscapes, captured from many specific places and projects. In the process, Reveil brings together dispersed and lesser known ecological projects and practices across disciplines and time zones, in a sketch of an acoustic commons in the making.

Streams range from temporary projects in people’s homes to large research networks. Each open microphone adds to the diversity of the mix.

This Reveil stream, neoscenes’ tenth year participating, comes from the property of friend and artist Jennifer Riefenberg, a tract of land sitting at 6850 ft (2015 m) on a rich riparian corridor along Surface Creek in western Colorado. The nearest village, Cedaredge is a couple miles away. To the northwest, north, and northeast, 10 miles (16 km) as the raven flies, sits Grand Mesa, the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, at 11,000 ft (3300 m). The surrounding property was formerly an agricultural area relying on irrigation waters coming off the Mesa. Before the white colonization in the late 18th century, this area was the Ute tribal homeland: it still is. There is a rich range of wildlife in the area—birds including Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), Red-tail Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), Great Horned Owls, Ravens (Corvus corax), Black-billed Magpies (Pica hudsonia), Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), Western Meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta), Mountain and Western Bluebirds, Nuthatches, House Sparrows and Finches along with bears, mountain lions, coyotes, mule deer, foxes, raccoons, skunks, marmots, and ground squirrels. Surface Creek, the main drainage for the area, runs on the east side of the property in a shallow valley lined with cottonwood, juniper, box elder, mountain mahogany, 3-leaf sumac, service berry, yarrow, rabbit brush, and volunteer fruit trees. In the sonic foreground there is an irrigation holding pond that sees regular visits of a variety of birds. Early May is a time for maximum snow-melt off the Mesa, and Surface Creek can swell to more than 600 cfs (17 cms)—two orders of magnitude over minimum flow. It typically displays large diurnal variations in flow, depending on the ambient temperatures. The creek flow will be the dominant sonic texture.

The property surrounding the house was once an apple orchard, beginning 140 years ago, but that came and went, leaving open grazing fields that rely on irrigation waters coming off the Mesa. Before the white colonization, this area was a rich Ute tribal homeland. There are a range of birds — bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), red-tail hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), ravens (Corvus corax), black-billed magpies (Pica hudsonia), starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta), sparrows, and so on. Surface Creek Road runs on the east side of the property, so there will be the occasional pick-up truck, ATV, or car racing up or down the long grade. The view to the south is to the magnificent San Juan Mountains, and to the southwest and west spans the long horizontal swell of the Uncompaghre Uplift at 9,000 ft (2700 m), looking everything like a massive dark tsunami, frozen in geologic time. The nearest neighbors are 1000 ft (300 m) away or more, but with few trees, one may hear goats, chickens, dogs, and cows in the background. Surface Creek is not far away, and will be experiencing peak springtime snow-melt, so there will be a low background sussurration arising from that.

Rick Albertson 1957 – 2022

We—Rick Albertson’s colleagues, fellow artists, activists, and friends—are deeply moved by his recent passing. Over many decades, Rick touched each of us in ways as diverse as his many interests, affections, and talents. At one time or another, we all will have been moved by his wit, candor, loyalty, and elan vital. He has indeed been a significant vector for us, nudging the course of our lives about in important ways. Many will have known greater joy, hope, and success on a given day because of Rick. Our debts to him are incalculable…but no matter, as Rick in his usual generous style would have forgiven those anyway!

Rick was an alumnus of the Penn State theater department where he obtained a degree in set design, a passion he had already cultivated by his mid-teens when working for the Erie Civic Theater Association. At that time, Rick was a lighting technician and also performed in the theater’s pit orchestra. Upon graduation, Rick was employed by various staging companies as well as operating one himself. His professional exploits carried him all over the US where he was responsible for staging countless conferences and media events. His colleagues will have known him for his boundless energy, creativity, and hands-on troubleshooting skills. There was no technical competency that Rick didn’t seem to possess. He had a way of bringing a sense of festivity into even the most stressful of working environments.

While based for many years in Atlanta, Rick played electric bass in many well-known jazz, rock, and blues bands, laying down a crucial bottom line at all sorts of performances and events. Forever in search of adrenaline, he was a crew member on the emergency rescue team at Road Atlanta Raceway, and he also managed to infect some of us with his love of whitewater rafting and scuba diving.

A voracious reader of…well…anything he could get his hands on, Rick was also an accomplished writer. He moved to California during the dot-com bubble where he worked for Talk City as an editor and administrator. Following that, Rick went to Boston as Contributing Editor for Senator John Kerry’s web site. Rick was also an active contributor to other sites like Democratic Underground and The Daily KOS. He eventually returned to Pennsylvania where he continued to be active in liberal politics, a lifelong passion of Rick’s where he worked as an activist on many fronts. Rick cherished democracy and seized every opportunity to promote and preserve it.

Rick’s capacity for listening and empathizing was unparalleled. Lastly, he went on to work with the Mental Health Association of Northwestern PA as a Certified Peer Specialist, interacting directly with a diversity of mental health clients…a perfect fit for this energized and energizing, compassionate man. It’s somehow appropriate that he will have touched their lives as he has ours…with affection, humor, love…and an inimitable way of assuring that all can and shall be well!

There are a range of birds — bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), red-tail hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), ravens (Corvus corax), black-billed magpies (Pica hudsonia), starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), meadowlarks (Sturnella neglecta), sparrows, and so on. Surface Creek Road runs on the east side of the property, so there will be the occasional pick-up truck or car racing up or down the long grade. The view to the south is to the magnificent San Juan Mountains, and to the southwest and west spans the long horizontal swell of the Uncompaghre Uplift at 9,000 ft (2700 m), looking everything like a massive dark tsunami, frozen in time. The nearest neighbors are 1000 ft (300 m) away or more, but with few trees, one may hear goats, chickens, dogs, and cows in the background.

Coming up 02-03 May, neoscenes joins in another annual live streaming broadcast for the sixth time with the Reveil 24-hour live broadcast 2020 that is one dimension of Soundcamp:

Reveil is a 24+ hour radio broadcast of the sounds of daybreak, co-produced by streamers around the world on Dawn Chorus Day each year.Reveil follows the changing wave of sound that circles the earth continuously along the grey line of first light, returning to its starting point after 24 hours without repetition.

Sounds produced by birds, amphibians, weather, fish, electromagnetic fluctuations, people, machines, vegetation, transmission artifacts, convey the variety of planetary soundscapes, captured from many specific places and projects. In the process, Reveil brings together dispersed and lesser known ecological projects and practices across disciplines and time zones, in a sketch of an acoustic commons in the making.

Streams range from temporary projects in people’s homes to large research networks. Each open microphone adds to the diversity of the mix.

hopkins/neoscenes sends a dawning stream into the ether from the dividing line betwixt plains and mountains … enjoy!

This Reveil stream, neoscenes’ sixth, is out the kitchen window listening to the ambient neighborhood sounds surrounding Delong Park, a new park-in-the-making, in Golden, Colorado. Nestled at the base of the west flank of South Table Mountain, the sounds are under the dampening influenced of the moment: coronavirus, lock-down, social-distancing, quarantine, and so on. The park sits at 1765 m / 5790 ft. In the immediate foreground is a “ditch” — an dis-used irrigation ditch that used to carry water from Clear Creek Canyon all the way to the Plains to the east for agriculture in this dry climate. Children use the ditch as a play area. The Park was once a strange-shaped concatenation of lots, perhaps two acres in total, with a house on it. For some reason the house was destroyed and the lot donated to the city. It’s been used by locals already on a regular basis for, yes, dog walking, but also, snowball fights, frisbee, soccer practice, and picnicking. Soon, however, the city will unveil a *plan* for the space, to make it an ‘official’ park in the city schema. Not much else going on!

The live microphone feed will include: local neighborhood car and dog-walker traffic; interspersed with the conversational cries of the black-billed magpie (Pica hudsonia), the hunting sounds of the occasional red-tail (Buteo jamaicensis) and Cooper’s (Accipiter cooperii) hawks, the territorial cries and pecking of the northern flicker (Colaptes auratus), and the cooing of the mourning doves (Zenaida macroura), along with a variety of other birds. There may be the occasional coyotes (Canis latrans) kicking up a racket, trying to seduce house dogs to come out and play (and get eaten)!

This Reveil stream is coming from a house set in a suburban mountain neighborhood at the fringe of wildlands on the east-facing side of Apex Park in Golden, Colorado. Overlooking the wide expanse of the High Plains, the house sits at 1890 m/6200 ft, the Mother Cabrini Shrine isn’t so far, at least as the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) flies, nor is Deadman Gulch. Apex Park is yet another expression of the Laramide Orogeny of the Rocky Mountains as they rise from the Great Plains of middle America. The view to the east is expansive and includes Lakewood, and off in the middle distance, the high-rise towers of Denver, Colorado, and the eastern horizon, looking towards the state of Kansas, is far enough away that you may easily see the curvature of the earth.

The live microphone feed will include far-away-though-still-violent vehicle susserations from Interstate 70 and 470; un-throttled air traffic ascending hard to cross the high mountains from the Denver Int’l Airport; local neighborhood car and dog traffic; interspersed with the conversational cries of the Black-billed Magpie (Pica hudsonia) and a variety of other birds. It’s not unusual to see large herds of elk (Cervus canadensis), very fat suburban coyotes (Canis latrans), lynx (Lynx rufus), and mountain lions (Puma concolor) among the houses here, but they are generally silent or absent at dawn.

A half-circle rotation, standing, looking east: from the far north, left, the Flatirons, vertically-tilted 280-million-year-old sandstone spires; then, North Table Mountain, a broad mesa of Paleocene lava flows, paired with South Table Mountain; then a wide gap straight east across the flat Denver Basin and, eventually, Kansas; book-ending the view to the south-south-east, right, the low expanse of Green Mountain; behind me, the raw mass of the Rocky Mountains. Late spring dawn slices directly through this horizon, the actual sunrise a brilliant post-Cartesian process. There is, yes, the left-right-up-down event, (artificially) timed — astronomical, nautical, civil — along azimuth, ecliptic, and the eventual arrival at zenith way up above, later.

But every instance, every now of dawn, every sequential instant is different. It is the same difference — the anisotropic distribution of energized matter in the cosmos — that drives the gravitational oscillations rolling our Gaian marble on a nautiloid trajectory, revealing and hiding stars, planets, and sun. Here, though, on the dividing edge, one is affected by that same attraction of masses. The mass of the mountains to the west — at one’s back while watching the dawn — create a slight lightening effect on the body: given the calculated metrics of the “terrain” and “Hammer” corrections to the local gravitational field. This, a complication of the two-infinite-half-spaces geophysical model of the earth that speaks only of earth below and heaven above, what the I Ching reads as matter and spirit, darkness and light. But it is the incremental, the incomplete, the fuzzy, and the complex interplay signified in the fluid transitions of topography, of ecosystems, of orbiting bodies, and specifically, of dawn that bring us to Life.

Beyond the unbalanced weight of waning dark and waxing gray; beyond the vocative release of the local aviary; beyond the grinding realization that it is probably a work day; beyond the memory of the reported deaths of the previous day; beyond the inexorable procession of awakening to light; beyond the rime of red-eyed pollution staining the horizon; beyond the shreds of nightdream; beyond the warmth of feathered bedding and gently aspirating partner; there is the underlying nature of reality:

Over the weekend of International Dawn Chorus Day on 5-6 May, soundcamps and streamers around the world will open microphones for the Reveil broadcast, sharing the sounds of places we hadn’t heard of or heard in this way before.

From a house perched on the rugged east-facing side of Mount Zion, at 1865 m/6120 ft above sea level, the view of sunrise is spectacular. Mount Zion is the first uplifted (remaining, continuing) expression of the Laramide Orogeny of the Rocky Mountains as they rise from the Great Plains of middle America. The view to the east is expansive and includes the town of Golden, Colorado, once the territorial capital, in the foreground; then comes the low North and South Table Mesa neither completely obscuring the view of the far horizon that is perhaps 75 mi. away towards the state of Kansas. The curvature of the earth is apparent, looking over this western edge of the Great Plains.

The live microphone feed will include a constant machinic backdrone of the Coors (beer) Brewery that sits on the east side of Golden; along with that is the sucking hiss of cars driving at high speed along a piece of 6th Avenue; often there is a significant wind; possible early-morning mountain bikers huffing up the Chimney Gulch trail below the house; interspersed with the conversational cries of the black-billed magpie (Pica hudsonia), the buzzing flight of ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris), and the rattling duel of gilded flickers (Colaptes chrysoides). There are red-tailed Hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), and the occasional golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), the occasional neighborhood dog barking, lots of LBBs (little brown birds) that I cannot name in the moment.

This year, for the morning sunrise, I plan to have a soft-and-sweet-spoken guest, and we shall have a dialogue that will float in the background of this sounding.

World Listening Day 2017: Listening to the Laramide Orogeny

This year’s World Listening Day theme is “Listening to the Ground”

“Sometimes we walk on the ground, sometimes on sidewalks or asphalt, or other surfaces. Can we find ground to walk on and can we listen for the sound or sounds of ground? Are we losing ground? Can we find new ground by listening for it?” — Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016)

In addition to this year’s theme, WLD 2017 reflects and honors the life and legacy of Pauline Oliveros, who died at age 84 on 26 November 2016.

Dozens of organizations and thousands of people from six continents have participated in World Listening Day since its inception in 2010.

From a house perched on the rugged eastern flank of Mount Zion, at 1865 m/6120 ft asl, a live-streamed microphone sits facing a 1.7 billion year-old (Precambrian) cliff behind my house. This cliff, made up of metamorphic schists and gneisses along with granitic rocks is the eastern-most face of the Laramide Orogeny. Mount Zion, in the company of the rest of the Rocky Mountains, is an uplifted expression of the orogeny, the tectonic event that occurred between 70 and 35 million years ago causing the Rockies of western United States to rise from the mid-western plains. The view to the east is expansive and includes the town of Golden, Colorado, once the territorial capital, in the foreground; then comes the low North and South Table Mesa, neither completely obscuring the view of the far horizon that is perhaps 100 km/75 mi away towards the state of Kansas. The curvature of the earth is apparent, looking over this western edge of the Great Plains, as is the impact of human activities at the intersection of mountain and plain.

Pauline Oliveros was a force of nature, a composer guided by her interest in harnessing cutting-edge technologies and her lifelong practice in deep listening.

In the early 1960’s, Pauline Oliveros composed with magnetic tape and prototype synthesizers at the San Francisco Tape Music Center. She was also an accomplished accordion player. A vocal self-advocate for her pioneering work, which remained consistently relevant throughout her lifetime, Oliveros held her ground as other talented female pioneers of electronic music went disregarded in the male-dominated field.

Her collaborations and improvisations were witness to her willingness to listen to others and to weave together a unique tapestry of talented musicians in marvelous acoustic spaces. And who is a musician? Anyone according to Oliveros. She wanted music to be free from specialists, and instead open to everyone regardless of status, experience, or ability.

In 1971, following a period of introspection triggered by John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the Vietnam War protests, Oliveros published her Sonic Meditations, a set of 25 text-based instructions meant to provoke thoughtful, creative responses for anyone to carry out to expand consciousness and healing. “Native,” the most commonly cited sonic meditation resonates well with Pauline’s suggested theme for World Listening Day 2017, Listening to the Ground. Pauline defined deep listening as, “listening in every possible way to every thing possible to hear no matter what you are doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life, of nature, of one’s own thoughts as well as musical sounds.” She urged us to, “Take a walk at night, and walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.”

Let us all slow down enough to let our feet become our ears. Let us listen to the ground on 18 July, World Listening Day 2017, in honor of composer and deep listener, Pauline Oliveros. — Andrea Williams, New York teaching artist.

His transdisciplinary research and workshops explore issues surrounding sustainable creative practices, ‘big-picture’ system views, networked & tactical media, distributed and community-based DIY and DIWO processes, networked creativity, and Temporary Autonomous Zones. His international media arts practice explores the role of energy in techno-social systems and the effects of technology on energized human encounter. He has taught across more than 20 countries and 60 higher education situations. He is currently organizing the geoscience dataspace and archive of the Colorado Geological Survey which, strangely enough, is now part of the aforementioned Colorado School of Mines… strange circles.

A 37-minute sonic improv titled basilisk troglodytae: in which the basilisk is lured along various paths into a cave by the thrumming song of the deus machina. Among the voices of the other damned souls, the basilisk is slowly consumed in a conflagration of mediatory devices. When completely digested, the basilisk returns, reborn, to the roots of its nature: a being that can cause the living to turn to stone. Despite all, Life retains its temporal vitality until it ends.

neoscenes joins the 2016 live broadcast of the Reveil 24-hour stream 2016 that is part of Soundcamp:

REVEIL relays the sounds of live open microphones provided by streamers around the world.

Starting on the morning of Saturday 30 April just before daybreak in Rotherhithe near the Greenwich Meridian, the Reveil broadcast tracks the sunrise west from microphone to microphone, following the wave of sound that loops the earth every 24 hours.

Sounds are provided by the LocusSonus network and other streamers, together with a collection of live audio sources assembled for this broadcast.

REVEIL is different from the vast majority of radio available online: it is not dedicated mainly to music or talk, and none of it is pre-recorded. Each sound is propagating live somewhere in real time.

Our aim is to open a space for listening to something else – especially, but not exclusively to non humans and from wild places – and in the course of one earth day to provide a sketch of this emerging field.

The Live Audio Archive is both paradoxical and fluid: streams come and go in response to technical issues, seasonal changes, and the movement of people and other creatures on different projects or migrations.

From the Prescott National Forest, (altitude 5400 ft/1650 m) in a third growth ponderosa or blackjack pine (Pinus ponderosa) forest, sitting on a 1.5 billion-year-old granite batholith, a live microphone feed before, during, and after dawn brings the sounds of the common ground-dove (Columbina passerina), red-naped sapsucker (Sphyrapicus nuchalis), common raven (Corvus corax), and a variety of other birds, some neighborhood dogs, a few wind-chimes, the occasional susseration of automobiles in the distance, and the wind in the pines. It’s springtime, but after ten weeks of late winter that broke all records on heat and lack of precipitation, the environment is stressed and desperate for any moisture. Wildfires, once seasonal, may now start at any time of year.

This feed is sent from the small under-reconstruction cabin studio of Dr. John Hopkins (aka neoscenes), a visual/sonic media artist and learning facilitator. He holds a creative practices PhD from La Trobe University/University of Technology Sydney, an MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder (where he studied film under renown experimental film-maker, Stan Brakhage), and a BSc in Geophysical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. His transdisciplinary research and workshops explore issues surrounding sustainable creative practices, ‘big-picture’ system views, networked & tactical media, distributed and community-based DIY & DIWO processes, networked creativity, and Temporary Autonomous Zones. His international media arts practice explores the role of energy in techno-social systems and the effects of technology on energized human encounter. He has taught across more than 20 countries and 60 higher education situations. He is currently hunting for meaningful work in a social system that is itself under severe psycho-spiritual duress. Is this the beginning of collapse?

Electrical transmission running through our neural networks produce all kinds of stimulations and impulses within us every day. The Internet network can be taken as a comparison of the nervous system that conveys information between neurons, are not exactly the same type of information circulating the same way or to pass this information – Electrical vs. Digital : is put in relation to its copy.

Since its origins, cybernetics seeks to re-create its own reality, whether or not this is wanted, by taking it into account the question arises : how can we transform this approach?

The Shout as a proposal for a sound practice combines its own dematerialization and reinstatement of disruptive wave vibrations in a powerful sound system – Taken as a starting point we propose “The Shout” as a constitutive element of musicality and poetry, all nuances that may transcend technological reality !! Is it possible? Let us know !!

A one-hour live improv stream of material drawn from a sizable analog/digital archive: the multi-tracked material will be selected based on a criteria of neural resonance — during a lead-up to the performance, and during the improv performance itself. There will be various electric field disturbances, recorded in a variety of ways, along with the neural traces of memory, re-constituted from ancient electromagnetic 4-track and cassette tapes.

The controlled behavior of a magnetic dipole is the primary model for all material used to store information via electromagnetics — both tape and hard-drive — to relinquish control of the dipole moment is to spin into chaos and noise.

The Festival starts on Friday night 26 February and runs through Sunday 28 February.

the 2016 Art’s Birthday stream

Went live/online a bit before noon (GMT-7), with a few folks hanging out — I had suggested it as an event for the Milagro Art Center — with an accompanying talk on Fluxus, but for some reason it wasn’t compelling enough for them. The IRC channel was quiet except for a few pings from naisa — probably more evidence how ‘social media’ has sucked the oxygen from online conversations (speaking as a FB non-participant). Twitter hosted some activity.

The stream was an improv mix from more than 400 files on a ten-track mix* quasi-organized with random/blind files mixed in. Listen to the archive broadcast in its entirety:

split world: memory

This schizophrenia seems largely invisible to the widest sample of the population. Offline behavior, so historically conditioned and un-self-conscious (at least as far as instigation, perhaps not process) proceeds without compunctions, aside from those traditional struggles for control and power between the image-maker and the subject. The contemporary selfie, a special case, propagates yet another psychic split within the self over power and control. This in juxtaposition to the huge deficit of awareness of the wholesale deposition of the Self into the hands of an increasingly omniscient corporo-governmental master. What to be said, there’s no stopping it until there is a higher level of consciousness. But will humans make that step, ever?

Our lives have become split between two worlds with two very different norms around memory.

The offline world works like it always has. I saw many of you talking yesterday between sessions; I bet none of you has a verbatim transcript of those conversations. If you do, then I bet the people you were talking to would find that extremely creepy.

I saw people taking pictures, but there’s a nice set of gestures and conventions in place for that. You lift your camera or phone when you want to record, and people around you can see that. All in all, it works pretty smoothly.

The online world is very different. Online, everything is recorded by default, and you may not know where or by whom. If you’ve ever wondered why Facebook is such a joyless place, even though we’ve theoretically surrounded ourselves with friends and loved ones, it’s because of this need to constantly be wearing our public face. Facebook is about as much fun as a zoning board hearing.

neoscenes joins in another live streaming broadcast with the Reveil 24-hour live broadcast 2015 that is one project of Soundcamp:

We organise overnight soundcamps where people can sleep outside and investigate the sounds of unusual locations, especially at daybreak.

We transmit REVEIL: a 24 hour radio broadcast that tracks sunrise around the globe, relaying live audio streams from collaborating artists, independent channels, and a variety of streaming media assembled for the event.

We are a platform for artistic and trans disciplinary work in the emerging field of live streaming audio.

We contribute to research and development of open source solutions for relaying live sounds, and establishing a permanent open microphone network as a resource for artists, researchers, activists and other listeners.

We assemble and produce materials online and in print as contexts for The Live Archive which Reveil taps into and extends.

Gamergate

It occurs to me, standing on the extreme periphery of Gamergate, that many of the actors are behaving as though they are in a typical first-person-shooter game: kill the bad ‘guy’. Gaming will change perceptions of unmediated reality and alter the way one interacts with that reality. True, playing a game is part of reality, but the degree of stylization and heavy attenuation of embodied experience creates a stunted relationship between unmediated life and time spent gaming. This cannot but have an effect on relation-with-Other, as any techno-social mediation institutes by its nature a change in the flow pattern between the Self and Other, regardless of the ‘intensity’ of that mediation. And with tens of millions of people heavily invested, immersed, and dedicated to this particular mediated form of relation, there is no turning back — that is, until the electricity goes out.

It’s been on tongues for awhile, and now it’s funneled over to main-lining media. Ello. Owen offers to send me an invite (it’s an exclusive club, and at this point, having reached a popular tipping point, they have had to shut down enrollments several times). It’s a very, very exclusive club: “we are creative technologists, we are agile engineers, we are experts”; One Hundred Thousand have loaded their privacy policy page. Have they read it?

We let you communicate in a modern way, none of the messy surveillance or privacy issues that have sullied those who came before. We, ensemble, we, Legion, are the future. How life is continuously squeezed into a sequence of highly controlled and rigid mediated social spaces that we are forced to enter, to behaviorally adapt to, to express ourselves within a sanctioned way, to build up social capital (no coincidence, that phrase!!) that accrues to the ‘owners’ of the protocols driving the space, and then, like lemmings, to trundle off to the next screen, following the herd.

Books, newspapers, magazines, radio, telephone, television, cameras, tape recorders, VCRs, arpanet, email, scrapbooks, telnet, IRC, UseNet, The Palace, Second Life, AOL, GeoCities, blogs, i-everything, MySpace, FB (sorry, can’t even manage to write the term!), uff.

radio aporee continuously plays recordings from its global soundmap project. however, it’s a responsive stream of sound, a radio that listens, that may (or may not…) recognize and react to events, e.g. new sound uploads, listeners tuning in, mobile app activity, live sessions, phone calls etc. it’s an ongoing experiment and exploration of affective geographies and new practices related to sound/art and radio.

radio aporee ::: maps has started 2006, based on former artistic research on mapping, spatial conditions and the navigation between the real and the virtual. The idea being to connect sound and space, and to create a cartography which focuses solely on sound, and open it to the public as a collaborative project. It contains 1000s of recordings from numerous urban, rural and natural environments, showing the sonic complexity of these environments, as well as the different perception and artistic perspectives related to sound, space and places.

setting a new server, fixing an old house

WAY TOO MUCH going on! Trench-digging and berm-building to play with water flow: stemming the monsoon floods. And on top of this, a major server migration to a more WordPress-friendly provider. One hundred minutes on the phone with a GoDaddy rep last night starting the migration. Granted she was nice and knew what she was doing, I’m still irritated at how it goes — how bad the WordPress blogs have been running since last March.

I find the Open Letter that was publicized by [AOL, Apple, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo] to be supremely ironic, calling for specific limits on the governments ability to collect, hold and use data on individuals. While they insure their own access is unfettered and as secretive as possible. The US has quite weak protections in place for personal data: legislation is ‘controlled’ as per everything else in Washington by the collusion of ‘power-full interests’.

This is the 6000th post to the tech-no-mad/neoscenes travelog/blog construct which is reaching for it’s twentieth anniversary in a few months. With entries that span several layers of time, and a variety of media, going back to the 1950s (and earlier) with material from the family archive, the scope is currently expanding at the rate of several hundreds a year. This year I was only seriously on the road for two months, plus-or-minus, so contemporary material is a bit thin. It is always a question of whether to focus on the past, the present, or the future. Be here now dictates that the present be the focus despite the impossibility of documenting now as the now is then by the time it appears here. Instead, some time is spent being concerned about and maintaining a viable range of future employment options. The past beckons on the strength of some quite nice photographic material. On that basis alone, in a world that is uploading X-billion images a second to FazeBuch, there is a sense of futility that settles over any online posting at all.

conversation with Alexandra

Have an interesting Skpye conversation with Alexandra last evening after getting home from Nadja’s place (missed the damn bus, or, more correctly, was given the wrong info from the KVG website on the timing of the return bus ride — there were no buses running by the time I left. So, a long walk over the Holtenauer Straße Bridge that spans the Ostsee Kanal, and down FeldStraße to DüppelStraße.) At any rate, Alexandra seems quite sharp, though participatory/collaborative online situations present new territory for her. I’ll be keen to see what she produces during her residency regarding VisitorsStudio (especially after deploying it with my Advanced Digital Art students at CU-Boulder this past semester to a very poor reception). Alexandra wants to explore the idea of open-sourcing the platform and perhaps employing more current social networking paradigms in the overall interface design. We’ll see. Not sure that either of those aspects would have made the platform more compelling for my students, actually not sure anything would have compelled them to be less conservative and more creatively present and engaged. Cattle prod anyone? Nah, but whether it was the particular local/immediate context or whether it was evidence of a wider crisis in the US is not so clear. Probably a combination of the two. Whatever, it was disheartening to the extreme.

godaddy down

Yesterday, this site was down apparently as a result of an Anonymous DOS attack on the godaddy DNS system. It happened, by chance, when I was in a small tutorial session talking about reliability of domain hosting services. This is the first major outage in my experience (with godaddy) in the seven years that I have used them. Not bad, but always a bit disturbing when it happens. Of course, the wider network was reverberating with the attack as godaddy is one of the largest hosting services anywhere.

Here’s a limited-rez documentation of my impromptu waterwheel performance that James recorded peripherally on a wifi laptop in Brisbane. As he was logged-in as a ‘back-stage’ crew member, there are many on-screen artifacts that would normally remain hidden from the audience. That and the usual glitchy problems with live online streaming events. It’s better after the first 4 minutes … the last fifteen minutes Suzanne and I have a conversation.

I responded to Suzon Fuks’ invitation to join a waterwheel performance this week – Wednesday, 22 August, between 1800 – 2000 MST (time converter here) — the detailed info on the performance as well as the gateway for joining in online is here. As I haven’t had much time to prep and to explore the potentials of the platform, I’m doing a relatively simple improv remix titled “Crossing the Yampa” with video material from Echo Park in Dinosaur National Monument, along tributaries of the Yampa and Green Rivers. Looking up, looking down, looking all around, listening, receiving the immersive flows, it’s about water and the life it supports.

A lonely Google Space Oddity

“A lonely Google Space Oddity” is a tragico-comic performance project by Guido Segni: his personal, lonely, and performative space oddity in the data-based universe of Google Sky.

Started in early December 2011, each day about 250 pieces (tiles) of universe are copied from Google database and then posted on Tumblr. Guido Segni’s gesture is the attempt to piece together the whole universe – as Google knows it – in the archive of a Tumblr Blog.

Considering that Google Sky universe contains about 44,085,333 pieces, the “Google space oddity” performance is scheduled to be completed in about 480 years, but it is still not clear whether the audience, Google’s servers, the tumblr archive, the Internet, or even the universe itself will last long enough to see the end.

In the meanwhile, enjoy.

(so far about 30,140 small pieces of universe have been copied from Google Sky and moved to Tumblr.)

I run a seminar/performance/facilitation on Monday, and will be randomly intervening during the week. not as fun as embodied presence, but hey, what can be done. so, from Boulder to Berlin. the next best thing to being there… so, about presence:

The expression of presence is an essential characteristic of the self-organized body-system. Presence is the announcement of be-ing and viability and requires first an inflow and then an outflow of energies from the body system through the conversion of energies from one form to another. This conversion process alters the entire fabric of local existence. Migration of the embodied and energized organism changes everything around it. What do you change around you? What is changed by those around you?

Shared presence is a dialogue of transformation and change. It is the crux of be-ing.

finally getting around to a good look at Oog, a curatorial project by Dutch artist Nanette Hoogslags curates at Volkskrant, a major Dutch daily newspaper. I happened to meet her for the first time when I was in Amsterdam last March when I had dinner with she and her husband, network activist David Garcia, an acquaintance of mine. Nanette comments on the current state of the project:

Oog is a commentary and opinion platform for the online edition of De Volkskrant, a major Dutch daily national newspaper. It began in September 2004 as a platform where every week a different artist working in sound and image is asked to respond to news and current affairs. The selection of artists participating has grown into a varied group of national and international artists working with very different forms of expertise and approaches. In this way, artists are using their skills to become commentators on events in a news environment. After each week, the work is placed in the archives, making the Oog collection accessible as a whole.

A long stroll to the Hauptbahnhof for tomorrow’s tickets. End up using the electronic ticket machine which leaves me with exactly no change because it doesn’t take EUR 100 bills. Fortunately I have exactly the cost, EUR 87.50 from Kiel to Aachen. Should have gotten a rail card 4-days/one-month it would have saved me a bit, too late now.

Muttering German phrases, words, repeating to self the texts on signs. Down to the harbor, ever so often, becoming mindful, not enough, but bringing the breathing and the hyper pace down a few levels, and deepening the breathing and shifting the worldview. On the way down there are several conglomerations of police in full riot gear. Apparently a football match between Lübeck and Kiel is taking place today. The police presence is overwhelming, and at the Hauptbahnhof there are at least 100 officers deployed, forming a press to search fans as they get off the train from Lübeck. Some are outfitted in dark green cloth-covered body armor, some are in black. No clear difference between the two uniforms. They mostly are large and imposing figures, a few women among the men. The football fans repeatedly break out in hoarse and echoing chants. The police escort the city buses to the stadium with riot vans, along with officers filming everything on dv-cams.

The sonic ambience is interesting. Getting good use out of the Zoom H4 (Ed: redundant link, now to the H4n-Pro which is way better than the discontinued H4). It seems to get pretty decent sound with the built-in microphones. I have yet to try the external phantom miking possibilities. Now it’s a question of getting the content online, though, I’m way behind on that, when each day is full of in-ma-face email pressures and logistics issues. So it goes!

Then Björn sends very dramatic footage from the riots in Copenhagen, right from his flat overlooking Sankt Hans Torv. He caught some of the molotov cocktails going off and some rude crowd action until the tear gas forced him to close his window.

share San Diego

Gary and I head out towards Balboa Park, but don’t actually make it. I wanted to get online for a couple hours of work, so he takes me to a cybercafe in North Park where the PowerBook exhibits it’s intransigent side — something that comes up about 2% of the time when connecting to a wifi node — it can see the node, says it’s connected, but refuses to actually establish a viable connection. grrrrr. the usual spate of re-starts, config changes, etc, to no avail. Gary puts up with my whining, then calls an acquaintance nearby, Christian Michaels, a professional photographer who happened to have a wifi network at his studio. we head south on Ray Street, a funky neighborhood to the beautiful studio built in a former sign-manufacturers space. he’s got a huge video projector with a 25×25-foot projection area at one end of the main studio. as we chat, turns out that he is hosting a share event in the evening! we have a good laugh that I am the share-nomad node. synchronicity! have lunch at a taqueria around the corner, and head back to spend the afternoon with Andrea and Ryan. then Gary comes by to fetch me for the evening happening. end up meeting Morgan Sully of share-San Diego and others. there is a screening of Metropolis, and I do a short VDMX improv. nice!

VisitorStudio

Furtherfield subset Furthernoise VisitorsStudio is the place. A Flash-based live-online visual-sonic collaborative platform developed at furtherstudio by Neil Jenkins. Roger Mills organized a test run with nine artists from Europe and US to come together today for a sequence of individual and collaborative performances in preparation for events later in June. Somehow, in the juggling of files in preparation, there are grim traces of current states of mind: in extremis.

Furthernoise is an online platform for the creation, promotion, criticism and archiving of innovative cross genre music and sound art for the information & interaction of the public and artists alike.

Furthernoise encourages new methodologies and practices in creating adventurous music and sound that is not bound by the constraints of historically experimental genres. We showcase artists work through critical reviews & features as well organising performances and events on the internet as well as public venues and galleries.

Furtherfield creates imaginative strategies that actively communicate ideas and issues in a range of digital & terrestrial media contexts; featuring works online and organising global, contributory projects, simultaneously on the Internet, the streets and public venues.
