portrait, Mpalaja and monitor lizard

portrait, Mpalaja and monitor lizard, Lohumbo, Tanganyika, December 1929 [WB]

I scanned a set of around one hundred glass lantern slides that my aunt’s father, William Bates [WB], a missionary to colonial East Africa, would use when touring US churches for fund-raising. I’ll be uploading selections on occasion. The family traveled together to live in the field, and my aunt spent much of her youth (mid-1920s to mid-1930s) in rural Tanganyika (Tanzania), not far from the Serengeti region. The slides document the people and places of that life.
