Rec’d a letter yesterday from Howard Shuck, now at SRI. He is on an Army project to work out the air traffic control problem over field armies! This is the one that Jack Nolan said didn’t exist! Ray Holland tells me the subsystem studies at Fort Huachuca are to have one on ATC added.

Had lengthy discussion with Harry Sussman on design of a digital data system. He had no references at hand, said that the number of bits used/word or/quantity is the exponent on 2 in the equation x=2n where x is the quantity measured. For example to convert the velocity of 25,000 ft/sec to digital form, to an accuracy of 1 foot, 15 bits would be necessary since 215 = 32768 and 214 = 16384.

some rain in AM

Met with Joe Smith of Trimont Automatic Sales re: the PSC audio outlet in this area. There certainly is a pronounced contrast between this chap and Mr. Fred Lakewitz who Ken & I spoke with yesterday.

Did a little digging in the yard; I’m still sore from last Saturday’s baseball!

Had discussion yesterday with a Mr. Podbros, New England Mutual Ins. CO. who wants to sell me $525,000 of LI to provide $150/mo at age 65. It costs $1900/yr. It looks to me as if I should return to the government & put back the cash I took out of the retirement system.
