Ironic detachment is the natural and not entirely unhealthy consequence of living in a media culture. When there are a thousand competing images, it's not a bad idea to maintain a certain knowingness, a certain self-consciousness, about the process by which messages are put forward. But the danger of ironic detachment is that it easily becomes cynicism or, worse, uncritical passivity, in which we watch for the sake of watching, waiting for the next scene of a drama whose plot we already know. - The New Yorker Magazine |
