The Fray, located at http://www.fray.com, is described as "a place for people who believe the web is about personal expression and a new kind of art." It contains many original and personal stories dealing with various issues ranging from problems on the job to intimate hopes and aspirations that almost anyone can identify with. Each story is presented with cool graphics that relate to the subject matter, which add a modernistic touch to stories that could have been written decades ago.
The main page of the website gives you four primary categories of generalized subjects to explore, each represented by black and purple cartoon characters. Their topics are exhibited as "criminal," "hope," "work," and "drugs" when the cursor is placed on the corresponding icon. The first three are self-explanatory of the types of themes included in the individual areas. Although the "drugs" category contains several antidotes about drug related experiences, most of the entries involve the idea of changing perception, which drug use promotes, as well as other experiences. After selecting a category, the available stories are displayed over an enlarged graphic of the icon which has been selected. The titles of the stories are displayed along with a quote extracted from its source and a smaller version of the graphic shown with the text. The three other icons that have not been selected as well as "fray," representing the main page, are presented to the side as options to enter those areas. The individual stories are well-written, truthful, and passionate with distinct styles. They do not follow any particular structure, instead the authors present their feelings and share their experiences in a unique and creative way which allows their personalities shine through. The graphics are a mixture of photographs and computer generated images, but they all reflect the content and the tone of each particular story. Some authors offer a response question at the end which gives the readers an opportunity to contribute to the site. They also contain links to other material they have created on the web. Another area can be entered from the large title and graphic "fray" on the main page. Here, there are options to become part of the Fray mailing list, send in comments, read what others have written about the site, and submit your own story. There is also a list of the authors with the titles of everything they have written on the Fray, which can act as a short cut to a particular piece, and can be entered through "people like us." When "people like you" is entered, the process of submitting work is explained along with the guidelines. The entries must be personal, honest, and under one thousand words. Fiction and poetry are not acceptable because this site was not designed for "just stories, but emotional reflection." The Fray is a site which captures the original thoughts and artistic talent of the younger generation, and has found a way to share them with an incredibly large audience. Real ideas are touched with emotions, expressed in a personal point-of-view and complimented with striking images and a dark design. |
