The Discovery Channel website: a review by Carrie Schayer

The web itself is large and difficult to move through, much like a spider web. However, it is very frustrating to finally find what you are looking for and then have the web site be a jumbled mess. I have thoroughly explored the Discovery Channel web site at http://www.discovery.com and have found it to be well organized and interactive for people of all ages.

The opening page includes a huge menu in the center of the page that covers the subjects of history, technology, nature, exploration, and science. Each subject has a cover story or special event. For instance, under the History heading is an interactive history game you can play with other web browsers. Under the Nature heading is a special on house flies. The editorial contains photos and text all about flies and there is even a video about house flies you can download on to your computer.

One of the most entertaining sections of the Discovery Channel web site is a set of articles called "The Skinny on..." by Hannah Holmes. Some of the amusing topics she addresses are; why there's no channel 1 on your TV, why toilet bowl water swirls clockwise, and the puzzling question of falling asleep twitches. Hannah Holmes explains these strange phenomena in easy to understand language. She is very clear and rather humorous in her writing, and addresses subjects we have always been curious about.

Along the side column of the main menu is a list of other places to travel on the Discovery Channel web site. Perhaps one of the most helpful items to click is a site map, which gives you an easy to read diagram of everything on the web site and where it is located. I found this very helpful and useful. This would be a great tool to use if you are looking for something specific. However, the best tool to use for searching thorough the web site is the Discovery search. By typing in a key word, you can get information from the past year on your given topic. The Discovery Channel web site is changed and updated every week, so there are a lot of articles and programs to aid your search.

The side column also lists the different networks on the Discovery Channel. This includes things like a kids channel, a science network and a travel and living network. When you click on the networks they show you a complete listing of the programs on the Discovery Channel for the given week. Some of the programs are clickable to include a brief summary of what is contained in the show.

On the side column you can also partake in a "Virtual Journey to Exotic Places". This week you can travel to Bangladesh and view all of the wonderful and fascinating scenery right from your computer screen. On this virtual journey you can enjoy the sights, sounds, tastes and goods from Bangladesh. For instance, if you wanted a hand woven rug from the native markets of Bangladesh, you can click to a shopping site and order a beautiful rug with your credit card.

During my search for a well organized and entertaining web site, I came across different things. Some web sites were too cluttered and some only catered to certain audiences. I feel that almost anyone can enjoy what the Discovery Channel web site has to offer, and will find it entertaining and informational in the process.
