Join Hands, as the project is called, was finished and presented in Spetember 1995, but shortly after that, it was removed/censored from the server. The staff at SICS (Art Nodes server connection) considered the work would be understood as child pornography and closed it down.
Our intention with the work was to work from the Internet as a context -- considering the facts that 80% of its users are white males, exploring both the myth that it is a democratic medium, its use as a distribution channel for child pornography, and the overall aesthetics of the Web.
The basic tree-structure through which the user navigates operates as a Freudian mechanism in each of the four tableaux that are presented in the work. The slick surface presentation is a metaphor for flatness -- where the white male is in the center of a world which is totally open and accessible to him. The idealistic, utopian, and cosmopolitan world outlook results in a trauma where the only way out is in.
